Kundli matching: what the score does not tell you

Thirty-six gunas is a checklist, not a verdict. The useful question is which specific factors in these two charts create friction, and whether they can be worked around.

Where guna milan helps

The ashtakoot system compares eight factors and gives a score out of thirty-six. It is a fast way to see obvious incompatibilities in temperament and health indications. It is not a measure of whether two people will be happy.

The three factors worth arguing about

  • Mangal dosha — often overstated, and usually manageable when both charts are read together.
  • Nadi dosha — the one that genuinely warrants a second look, because the classical texts treat it seriously.
  • Bhakoot — a frequent cause of low scores between otherwise strong matches.

When the score is low

A low score is a prompt for a proper reading, not an automatic no. Ask which factor is dragging it down, how strong the cancellation rules are in these charts, and what the astrologer would actually advise. If the answer is only 'do a puja', find another astrologer.

Bring both charts

Matching needs both birth details. A reading on one chart alone can only guess at the other person, and guessing is how matching gets a reputation for being unreliable.

Questions people ask

Is 18 out of 36 enough to marry?

It is the common threshold, not a rule. A score below 18 with strong cancellations can be fine, and a score above 18 with Nadi dosha still needs discussion. The score is the start of the reading.

Can Mangal dosha be cancelled?

Frequently, yes — by placement, by aspect, or by matching against a chart with a comparable dosha. This is one of the places where reading both charts matters most.
